The elevations in Swain County range from 1,085 feet to 6,643 feet. The highest elevation is Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of the peaks over 3,000 feet are located in the park or on land controlled by the US Forest Service.

Southwestern Community College operates a satellite site within the county. Western Carolina University is only 25 miles away and offers a broad curriculum; they further provide cultural activities for area residents.
