Swain County is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery
in the entire world. Nestled among the mountains of the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park, the region boasts wilderness areas of unparalleled
beauty. Bryson City is within a 50 - 200 mile radius of many major
cities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville
and Columbia. The Great Smoky Mountains Expressway, a four-lane
roadway, links Bryson City with I-40 and provides easy access to
other urban areas.
Temperatures range from an average high of 84 degrees in
July to an average low of 26 degrees in January. Snow is
an occasional occurrence in the winter but seldom results in major
disruptions of activities. Most snowfalls are under 4 inches and
disappear in a few days. Annual precipitation averages about 48
inches with average relative humidity around 68 percent.
The elevations in Swain County range from 1,085 feet to
6,643 feet. The highest elevation is Clingman's Dome in
the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of the peaks over
3,000 feet are located in the park or on land controlled by the
US Forest Service.
Swain
County is also fortunate to have excellent schools. While
rural in nature, the schools consistently rank among the top schools
in the state. Southwestern Community College operates a satellite
site within the county. Western Carolina University is only 25 miles
away and offers a broad curriculum; they further provide cultural
activities for area residents. |
